Persuasive Writing - Caving, by Emma

I strongly believe that the Year seven students should be allowed to go caving. They should be allowed to go caving because it’s a great learning experience, you get to try new things and it’s really enjoyable.

Firstly I believe the Year sevens should be allowed to go caving because it’s a really great learning experience. You get to learn all about how caves are made what’s in them and and how to be safe in one. Knowing how to be safe in and around a cave can be a very important skill to learn for future situations. I personally think that I will use the safety skills when I’m older and I want to caving so I don’t get injured. This is my first reason why I believe that the year sevens should be allowed to go caving.

Secondly I believe the Year sevens should be allowed to go caving because they can try something new. Its good to get out of your comfort zone, face your fears. In my opinion it's good to try something new because you can find out a lot more about yourself and what you enjoy doing. I also think that it is important to beat your fears and the only way to do that is to ‘just do it!  Everyone should have an opportunity to try and enjoy things they have never done before. This is my second reason why I believe that the year sevens should be allowed to go caving.

Finally I believe the Year sevens should be allowed to go caving because it's really enjoyable. You’re  with all your friends out of the classroom trying something new, you get muddy and see things that you have never seen before. Everyone wants to have an enjoyable time when ever they can. This is my third and final  reason why I believe that the year sevens should be allowed to go caving.

For these reasons I strongly believe that the Year sevens should definitely be allowed to go caving.

Powell Hut - by Abby

Persuasive Writing - Powell Hut

I think that the Year 8s should go to Powell Hut because of the following reasons. It is a school tradition meaning many Year 8s before us have done it, proving that it is possible to do it at our age. It is also a good challenge. It’s good exercise which helps us to get fit and it will make us feel proud of ourselves and feel a great sense of achievement.

In addition it’s good to get out of your comfort zone and do things you don’t want to do and tramping up Powell Hut at this age is a once in a lifetime experience. Finally there are beautiful views of the Wairarapa and the sun set/rises are amazing. Without a doubt Powell Hut is a great experience which may be difficult, but well worth it in the end.

Room 14 'Takes a Stand'

Last week after the Football Tournament at Carrington Park our class decided to 'Take a Stand' against irresponsible dog owners who leave behind 'doggy do do's'. So we composed and sent a letter to the Carterton Council. Here is our letter.

Dear Council

Lately at Carrington Park there has been a lot of dog faeces found as some dog owners are not picking up their dog's faeces. When there is dog faeces around, it makes it hard for students and the community to use the park.

Dog faeces can also be stood in and brought into the classrooms, toilets, peoples vehicles, the playground and the footpaths around our town.  It can also end up on clothing and children's bodies as they play sports.

In our school we use the park for games and sports events, so we use it regularly.  On Saturday mornings there are different sports such as football being played with, many people coming along to participate and watch.

Dog faeces is bad for our health and can cause people to get very ill because it’s full of horrible parasites. When it's on our shoes and clothing we smell bad and it's hard to get off. Dog faeces is also bad for the grass, It can burn it and discolour it, making our park unsightly to our community and any tourists stopping for a rest.

A few ideas for helping to stop this problem are adding another bin at the entrance from our school by the new path in front of the tennis courts.  Providing waste bags by all bins - these could be recycled plastic bags from the community and putting up signs about dog owners responsibilities and the consequences of them not being responsible dog owners.

We have researched the Dog Control Act 1996 and it clearly states that (iii) ‘ Imposing on the owners of dogs obligations to ensure that dogs do not cause a nuisance to any person and do not injure, endanger, or cause distress to any person’.  While we still want the park available for all of the community including dogs, we would really appreciate it if you could help keep our park beautiful for everyone.

Kind Regards

Rocky Lookout by Abby Saywell

Rocky Lookout Tramp by
Abby Saywell

Yesterday on the 5th of August the Year 8 students of Carterton School got into their car groups and went to Mt Holdsworth. When we got there we meet up with Glenn Beach who was going to be coming with us on our practice tramp up to Rocky Lookout and also giving us some helpful tips for when we go on our hike up to Powell Hut. Once all of the students had gotten to Mt Holdsworth we talked to Beachy about what to put in our packs. He had on the table a pile of random objects and we all had to decide which objects we needed, might need or didn’t need at all. When we had finished Beachy talked us through what everything was and how it worked and what we did and didn’t need. Our next activity was to get into 3 small groups and figure out how far we would be walking today. Most groups guessed around 4 to 5km which was correct. We then talked about what food we should pack for going to Powell Hut. Beachy said to try to throw away packaging and to carry the lightest food possible. We had morning tea and went to the bathroom before we went up to Rocky Lookout. Just before we left we had one last activity to do. We all got into one big long line and he numbered us off so if one of us got lost we would know because they weren’t there. We had to yell out our numbers as loud as we could and remember our numbers throughout the whole walk. We also had to get into buddies but it didn’t last very long because everyone split up. About 10 minutes into the walk Alyssa hurt her knee so I walked with her the rest of the way up to the top. We stopped a few times and Jessica had bad asthma so she had to walk back down with Jasmin and one of the parent helpers. We kept going and before we knew it we were at the top of Rocky Lookout. Leana strapped up Alyssa’s knee so that when she went down it didn’t hurt as much. We had lunch at the lookout and when we finished we numbered off and walked back down again. Going down was much easier because we jogged most of it because it was steep and we had lots of energy after having our lunch. When we got to the bottom we got ourselves into our car groups and went back to school. Rocky lookout was a fun experience and it was a good practice tramp to build up to Powell Hut.

What a fantastic day we had yesterday for our first practice tramp to Rocky Lookout.
We could see Powell Hut in the distance from the lookout and the views were just amazing.  I was so proud of our Year 8's, some struggled, some just flew...... roll on week 7!
